As part of the Environmental Psychology Research Group, Space Works Consulting developed a solution to activate the Duke of Kent Terrace University of Surrey campus in Guildford.
The Terrace is a neglected central public place adjacent to the campus’s signature architectural piece, Grimshaw & Partners’ Duke of Kent Building. On-site analyses including behaviour mapping, SWOT analysis, and interviews with target users were used to identify opportunities to enhance the usability and attractiveness of the Terrace, as well as people’s affinity to the space. Behaviour mapping was conducted via video recordings of the site from a sample of vantage points at key times in the day. The sample was analyzed to create a density map of pedestrian and vehicle flow around the space, informing the design strategy in terms of when the space might be most heavily used and how to draw people into it. A design brief was developed providing clear functions for the space, increasing its calm and restorative nature, and meeting key public space needs currently not provided on campus. As participation and public activities are central elements to the strategy it will enhance people’s feeling of identity and attachment to the area. The design brief was delivered to Facilities management and is currently under consideration.
